Syride offers a new, improved version of its Sys'Nav. Combining practicality and lightness, the Sys'Nav XL is a connected device with multiple possibilities.
It includes the usual Alti-Vario-GPS, as well as live and Bluetooth technology. All this for a reduced weight of just 85 g.
"The challenge was a major one… Meeting the expectations of pilots who wanted to keep the SYS’Nav format while benefiting from the features and technologies of the SYS’Evolution. The first technical outlines of this instrument were drawn up in 2018. By listening closely to pilots and retailers, it quickly became clear that the ideal instrument lies in the combination of the versatility of the SYS’Nav (robustness, reliability, simplicity, autonomy, riser mounting…) and the performance of the SYS’Evolution (large screen, readability, functions, connectivity…)." Syride.
When you first hold the SYS’Nav XL in your hands, this is what you notice right away!
30% larger than its little brother, the 2.7’’ screen chosen by Syride features a reflective active-matrix technology similar to that used in the SYS’Evolution.
The benefits for the pilot are undeniable: optimal outdoor readability (the more sunlight, the higher the contrast).
Whatever the conditions, you can be sure to have a readable screen.
In addition, the screen resolution (400x200 pixels) is extremely fine (22 times finer than the SYS’Nav V3 screen), with a pixel spacing of 0.147 mm (by comparison, it is 0.152 mm on the SYS’Evolution). The pilot can therefore display more information, precision and detail on the same screen. Readability is also more pleasant, as the pixels are not visible.
Screen customization is therefore much more versatile, with a wide choice of sizes, resizable items, the ability to add text and frames:
You will find SYS’Evolution items such as the highly appreciated thermal centering, the graphical vario, and the track summary. To limit in-flight interactions, Syride has added the possibility to automatically change screens depending on whether you are near an airspace, in a thermal, in transition, or approaching a waypoint. This allows the pilot to no longer worry about instrument handling in flight; once configured, it will automatically display the relevant information according to the situation you are in.
Integrating a loudspeaker to achieve the same sound quality as the SYS’Evolution was a complex task. They wanted to keep a front-facing output to avoid sound loss. Despite the larger screen, they managed to integrate a 1 Watt loudspeaker (0.5 Watt on the SYS’Evolution) while respecting the manufacturer’s recommendations in order to obtain the best possible sound quality!
Building on their experience with SYS’Evolution connectivity, it was hard to imagine a new instrument without Bluetooth. For Syride, it remains the best compromise for internet connectivity and using peripherals on a flight instrument.
It was highly anticipated for its ease of use and reversibility: USB Type-C equips the SYS’Nav XL flight instrument. A new plastic injection mold had to be produced to meet all these new requirements (screen, loudspeaker, USB, etc.).
The surface of the electronic board was reduced to make room for a battery with 40% higher capacity than the SYS’Nav (850 mAh versus 600 mAh). This increase is essential to meet the energy demands of the power-hungry loudspeaker.
A new, thinner and lighter technology has been adopted on the SYS’Nav XL for its mounting (risers or cockpit).
Obviously, the Sys Nav XL is primarily designed for paragliders who are into cross-country flying. This flight instrument gives you access to all the essential in-flight information needed to make the right decisions. The Nav XL is both a GPS vario and an ideal paragliding navigation tool!
For hike & fly enthusiasts, you will also find everything you need. The Syride Sys Nav XL is very compact, measuring only 10 cm x 6.1 cm x 1.7 cm. It will easily slip into the pocket of your backpack. Its 81 grams will not add unnecessary weight to your pack on the climb.
With its Bluetooth connection, the Syride becomes extremely versatile. It allows you to access your navigation and flight data directly on your phone via the XC Track application. In addition, this navigation instrument lets you record your competition task and provides the optimal track between each waypoint. Finally, the Nav XL is able to alert you when approaching an airspace, helping you avoid the mistake of entering it.
In summary, here are the strengths and limitations of this navigation instrument:<
Strengths of the Nav XL:
Limitations of the Sys Nav XL:
- Sys One and Sys Alti: Beginner pilot looking to improve thermalling skills.
- Sys GPS: Beginner to recreational cross-country pilot seeking performance with the essential data required for distance flying. Please note that this model is not sufficient for competition.
- Sys GPS and Sys Nav XL: Experienced cross-country pilot, or pilots wishing to compete while keeping a simple, easy-to-read instrument.
- Sys Evo V2: For distance and competition pilots looking to optimize their flights and performance.
Depending on the configuration and whether Bluetooth is turned on or not, the battery life of your Sys Nav XL will vary. Here are a few indicators:
- Bluetooth switched on and connected to the phone: battery life between 15 and 20h
- Bluetooth disconnected: battery life between 30 and 40h
- Use in very cold conditions: expect a slightly reduced battery life
Yes, absolutely! You can connect your Sys Nav XL to your phone and start live tracking. By going to this link, you will be visible to everyone in real time. Ideal for letting your friends find you, or for your partner to tease you once she sees that you landed in the middle of the Bauges. She will then know that she has to pick up the kids from school and won’t worry about you coming back after three days of hitchhiking.
In another context, you can also connect your navigation instrument with XC Track and FlySkyHy. This will allow you to transmit data from your Sys Nav XL directly into the applications.
From a technical point of view, the main differences between the Sys Nav XL and the Sys Evolution lie in the size of the device and therefore the screen. The Sys Evo is much larger (6-inch screen), which allows for easy screen readability. The fluidity of the Evo V2 is also higher. Each action is instantaneous.
In terms of use, the Sys Nav XL includes all the elements useful even for high-level pilots. However, for more precise navigation, the mapping of the Evo V2 is very accurate and pleasant.
Finally, from a safety perspective, the Evo V2 can integrate the ADS-L system. This system, resulting from a European reflection on aircraft flight safety, automatically transmits your position to other equipped pilots. This allows them to instantly detect you in flight and warn you in case of potential collision. Better anticipation therefore significantly reduces the risk of collision. The difference with Flarm is that this solution is open and accessible, unlike Flarm technology, which is a proprietary solution requiring a subscription.
There are two ideal solutions for mounting your Sys Nav XL:
- The first, classic option, is on your cockpit. Installed next to your phone with XC Track running, you’ll have the perfect setup.
The second solution is to mount your Syride instrument on the risers of your wing. This gives you excellent visibility of the device as it sits very close to your field of vision. In addition, it won’t interfere with your piloting, so no worries there.
Other mounting options are also possible, for example on your thigh using a Velcro strap wrapped around your leg. The possibilities are numerous; it’s up to you to find the best way to keep the screen of your Sys Nva XL visible.
