What is a single-skin paraglider?

A single-surface glider is a paraglider without the lower part called the "intrados."

Paraglider manufacturers have extensively studied the aerodynamic forces that allow a glider to fly. They concluded that the lower part, the intrados, is not essential over most of the glider's surface.

A single-surface paraglider is a specialized tool for specific practices. At the same size, its design and construction offer lower flight performance compared to double-surface gliders, considered as standard. Nonetheless, it remains an exceptional tool for experienced athletes eager for trail running, climbing, hiking while descending by flight!

What are the advantages of a single-skin paraglider?

The inherent advantage of this type of glider is, of course, its weight. The Run & Fly, the lightest model on the market, weighs only 980g. Other models like the Skin 3 P from Niviuk are under 2kg. A significant difference compared to standard gliders. This is no accident, as besides saving on fabric without the intrados, the weight of the fabric itself is lighter than that of standard paragliders. Finally, the surface area of the glider and the length of the lines are also optimized to reduce the weight of the single surface.

Single-surface paragliders are particularly easy to handle. Their lightness reduces inertia on the pitch and roll axes, resulting in less pronounced pitching and easier re-centering compared to a standard glider. Additionally, these gliders are extremely easy to inflate! This means you can spend less time on the training slope and get into the air faster!

Another positive point for these gliders is the price. These gliders are often cheaper than traditional gliders, making it easier to invest. They are also highly sought after in the second-hand market, which helps limit depreciation and makes them easy to resell.
