STNA Orange windsock: For airfields in Africa

The STNA orange windsock is designed for use on helicopter runways, airfields and airports on the African continent or in Nordic countries. It complies with ICAO standards, using colors and dimensions standardized for these countries. The polyester fabric is ultraviolet-resistant, so it lasts longer. Its 3-thread braided mesh design limits the risk of tearing. What's more, the windsock is moisture inert and mildew resistant. It attaches to a wind vane via an eyelet system.

How to use a windsock

The windsock is a device designed to indicate not only wind direction, but also an estimate of wind speed. It consists of a mast, to which a conical fabric sleeve is attached, made up of five rings alternating three red and two white. Each of these colored bands, when the windsock is inflated by the wind, is equivalent to approximately 5 knots or 9 km/h. The sleeve is therefore horizontal when the wind is blowing at more than 25 knots (approx. 45 km/h). This gives an estimate of the wind speed. The dimensions of the windsock are determined by the distance from which it is to be seen.
